The European Commission adopted on Tuesday an amending proposal for the EU’s Recreational Craft Directive. The revision includes new marine engine exhaust emission limits and improvements to boating safety requirements.
The new exhaust emission limits propose at least a 20% reduction of emissions from recreational crafts. Over recent years, IMEC (ICOMIA’s Marine Engine Committee) and EUROMOT (the European Association of Internal Combustion Engine Manufacturers) have been proactively involved in the drafting process of this new revision by demonstrating feasible and clean engine exhaust emission limits and contributing to all three scientific Impact Assessment studies conducted by the European Commission.
“Acceptance of this proposal will give us one exhaust emission rule applicable in all global key markets including the EU, USA, Canada and Japan which impacts manufacturers’ costs in this tough market of today”, says Udo Kleinitz, ICOMIA’s Technical Manager. “The recreational marine industry welcomes the confirmation of the European Commission’s proposal.”
The draft will now be considered by the European Parliament and European Council under the Ordinary Legislative Procedure.
