Description

From 2010, the percentage of bio additives in fuels within the EU will be increased, both for petrol and diesel engines, up to an amount of 10%. It might be appropriate to consider now which sort of fuel will be the best choice for running boat engines when this occurs. Basically, most marine engines can be operated with these new fuels if some specific attributes are considered. To be completely certain, engine manufacturers should be contacted if there are any doubts about running the engine with E10/B7. We benefit from the experience of the introduction of E10 in the USA and the lessons learnt are included in this Technical Note. The majority of issues have arisen with the whole fuel system rather than the engine itself. Fuel compatibility for each fuel will be considered in two steps: engines and fuel systems. Comments are also made for marina operators.
