South Korea Announces Major Strategies to Revitalise the Marina Industry and Tourism

South Korea Marina Infrastructure Revitalisation Plan

At the recent Ministerial Meeting of International Economic Affairs held in Seoul, South Korea, on 19 June 2026, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of South Korea presented the strategic plan for the revitalisation of South Korea’s marina infrastructure. In a press release regarding the announcement, the MOF outlined a “Demand-Oriented Marine Revitalisation Plan” intended to provide “a strong foundation for the growth of the marina industry and tourism”.

A Welcome Government Focus

The Marina and Marine Industry Association of Korea (MMIAK) has welcomed the government’s focus on developing the marina sector. MMIAK Secretary-General Mr Park Gone-Woo shares the industry’s response to the initiative:

South Korea is a maritime nation surrounded by the sea on three sides, but the development of the marina industry has long faced both natural and socio-cultural challenges. Marine leisure activities have traditionally been concentrated during the summer season; regional differences in demand, institutional frameworks, and operational conditions have also limited the industry’s growth.

A Shift Toward Tourist Experiences

It is believed tourism trends have changed significantly. Travellers are moving away from standardized sightseeing toward experiences that combine nature, relaxation, and hands-on activities. There is also growing demand for integrated tourism that connects land-based and marine experiences, as well as personalized travel that reflects individual lifestyles and preferences. One of the most important challenges for the future would be how effectively Marinas can be connected with local tourism resources, culture, accommodations, and commercial districts to create greater synergy and added value.

A Unique Marine Environment

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries in Korea recently announced “Demand-Oriented Marina Revitalization Plan” which presents a meaningful vision for overcoming these constraints. It offers a Korean-style Marina development model that reflects the country’s unique marine environment, culture, and market characteristics.

AI-Based Smart Marina Technologies

In particular, the introduction of “AI-based smart marina” technologies is expected to significantly enhance convenience by providing real-time information on berth availability. These innovations will also improve operational efficiency, increase berth utilization, strengthen service competitiveness, and ultimately contribute to profitability for marina operators.

Marinas should evolve beyond simply providing berthing facilities. They should become key hubs for regional tourism and comprehensive platforms for marine leisure activities. Ultimately, the future of Korea’s marina should create “marinas that attract more people,” and “marinas that generate Value ” This transformation will provide a sustainable foundation for the long-term growth of the marina industry.
