Beruwala Boat Launching Ramp Strengthens Sri Lanka’s Boat Building Industry

Beruwala Boat Launching Ramp Strengthens Sri Lanka’s Boat-Building Industry.

An Important Step Forward for Sri Lanka’s Boat-Building Industry

The Chamber of Marine Industries of Sri Lanka (CMISL) has shared an update on the valuable and sustained collaboration between government and industry to deliver infrastructure that supports economic growth and industrial competitiveness.

The opening of the Beruwala Boat Launching Ramp on 11 June 2026 marks an important step forward for Sri Lanka’s boat-building industry, providing critical infrastructure that will enhance manufacturing capability, improve operational efficiency and strengthen the sector’s export potential. Developed by the Ministry of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development, the facility fulfils a long-standing priority identified by CMISL.

Beruwala – One of Sri Lanka’s Principal Boat-Building Centres

Beruwala has long been recognised as one of Sri Lanka’s principal boat-building centres, home to a concentration of manufacturers, repair yards, suppliers and skilled craftsmen. Until now, the absence of a dedicated launching facility has created logistical challenges, increased costs and reduced operational efficiency for local builders.

Following years of advocacy by CMISL, the new ramp provides a safe and efficient launching facility for fishing vessels, passenger boats, leisure craft, catamarans and other specialised vessels. The investment is expected to reduce production bottlenecks, improve productivity and strengthen the competitiveness of Sri Lankan manufacturers in both domestic and export markets.

Commitment to Developing Sri Lanka’s Marine Manufacturing Capability

The inauguration was attended by representatives from government, industry and the marine sector, reflecting a shared commitment to developing Sri Lanka’s marine manufacturing capability and supporting the country’s growing maritime economy.

The project forms part of wider efforts to expand Sri Lanka’s boat-building industry. While the country is home to approximately 68 boat manufacturers, only around 10 are currently active exporters, highlighting significant opportunities for future international growth.

Developing Recognised Quality Standards

To help realise this potential, CMISL is working to improve industry capability by developing recognised quality standards in partnership with the Sri Lanka Standards Institution, while also promoting its Grow Boat Manufacturing initiative to strengthen domestic production and prepare more companies for export markets.

The Chamber also continues to showcase the industry’s capabilities through events such as the 2026 Boat & Marine Show Sri Lanka and is planning a joint symposium with the Sri Lanka Export Development Board and the Ministry of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development. The programme will focus on international standards, certification, market access and strategies to help Sri Lankan manufacturers compete globally.

The Beruwala Boat Launching Ramp

The Beruwala Boat Launching Ramp represents more than a new piece of infrastructure. It demonstrates how industry advocacy and government partnership can deliver practical outcomes that improve competitiveness, support exports, and create long-term opportunities for sustainable growth. As Sri Lanka continues to invest in its marine manufacturing sector, projects such as this provide a stronger foundation for the country to establish itself as a competitive regional hub for boat building and marine services.
