IMO reduces NOx emission limits

The new global Tier II emission limit of 7.7g/kWh will come into force January 1st 2011 as an amendment to Annex VI of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) MARPOL convention. This means that registering a boat can become a problem in countries where flag state administrations enforce IMO requirements, since the proof of compliance varies widely between flag states.
“Boat builders should be aware of the new IMO limits and be prepared to quickly provide IMO certification if required”, says Udo Kleinitz, Technical Manager at ICOMIA (the International Council of Marine Industry Associations).
IMO, a specialised maritime agency of the United Nations, develops and maintains a regulatory framework for operation, safety and environmental concerns. The current NOx emission limit (Tier I) is 9.8g/kWh.
