Description

Our first harbour to be constructed and managed was Port Zelande in the Southwestern part of the Netherlands, in the province of Zeeland. Zeeland is one of the most prominent parts of our country when it comes to sailing, diving and all the other forms of marine recreation. The Grevelingen is a lake in this area that is famous for the quality and the underwater visibility of its waters. The lake is bordered by a dike that separates it from the North Sea and its beaches. This artificial separation – the kind that made the Dutch struggle with the sea so famous – was the place chosen to become the first yacht harbour to be developed by Rene Coltof Ltd. A small peninsula, left over by the engineers and workers of the well-known `Deltaplan` is nowadays a complete resort. It boasts not only a yacht harbour but also 750 bungalows, restaurants, tropical swimming pool and so forth in a Mediterranean atmosphere. Today, Port Zelande is a name that every yachtsman has not only in his books but also in his head. A new challenge offered itself in Ijmuiden. Due to the building of large piers straight into the sea, the course of the tidal streams became such that millions of tons of sand came to rest in the elbow of the South Pier and the former beach. The result was a new beach that `grew` with a speed of approximately 30 metres a year into the sea.
