Description

The Netherlands has approximately 140,000 cabin cruisers, the major part of them having below-the-waterline-toilets. Under Dutch law the discharge of domestic waste waters by pleasure craft is permitted only in very exceptional cases. In reality the situation is therefore that practically all pleasure craft in this country discharge their black and grey water direct to the surface water. In this paper I would like to give an outline of what has been done so far in this country to tackle the water pollution problems, who has done what, and what follow-up activities have been planned for the future.
