Description

The European Blue Flag Campaign Opportunities for environmental management of marinas and community interactions In the Second Announcement of the ICOMIA – IMC `96, you find the following statement of what Mr. Tim Donkin of ICOMIA, United Kingdom, would and did address in his speech during the session of opening addresses: “…stress, in a global context, the vitally important role played by marina operators in fortifying a favorable impression of the industry not only to our customers but to the community in which marinas do business, the local, state and national governments which benefit by their contribution to the economy, the environmental protection groups for their sensitivity to the need for clean air and clean water, and to the world for providing wholesome and aesthetically pleasing focal points for recreation. This statement puts the marina in its setting with respect to who poses demands on – but certainly also – benefits from its operation. In my own presentation, I would like to highlight a few of these interactions, while giving you an impression of the perspective on marina operation that comes with a concern for environmental education and awareness-raising, the protection of the coastal environment and voluntary action of communities and private operations – individually and in cooperation.
