Description

MARINA WATER QUALITY AND SEDIMENTATION Marinas for recreational boating must meet strict environmental standards to satisfy the legal requirements of most countries and to meet the expectations of their clientele. One of the principal requirements is that the water quality within the marina basin meets public health criteria and avoids adverse impacts on marine eco-systems. With adequate control of inflows to the marina, this requirement is not hard to meet on coasts with a large tidal range, or where there is a strong estuarine outflow providing effective exchange of water between the marina and the outside waters. In other cases, the exchange mechanisms are weak or act intermittently necessitating careful calculations and frequently physical or numerical modeling. The paper outlines the different sources and exchange mechanisms and briefly considers sedimentation processes within the marina.
