Description

At 5:46 AM. on January 17, 1995, a major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 on the Japanese scale struck Kobe, Japan. The earthquake resulted in over 5,200 fatalities and widespread damage to buildings; bridges; transportation systems; and the infrastructure of the area. The Port of Kobe, the second largest in Japan, was essentially put out of business. Since the Port of Kobe handles a majority of the container traffic in Japan, the economic impact has been considerable, and will continue to be until this import / export lifeline is completely restored.
