Boating Technology Day at HISWA te Water Boat Show 2025 – ICOMIA’s Technical Director, Patrick Hemp, reports from the successful Netherlands event.
Boating Technology Day Hosted by ICOMIA’s Marine Engine Committee
ICOMIA’s Marine Engine Committee hosted the second Boating Technology Day on Wednesday, 3rd September 2025, at the HISWA in Water Boat Show.
Special guests included Mr Jan Mayerhöfer and Ms Izabela Ostrowska from the European Commission (DG GROW, Unit H.2) as well as Mr Loïc Douvillé and Mr George Charles from CSES who have been appointed to complete an Evaluation Study as part of the review process of the Recreational Craft Directive (RCD).

Propelling Our Future & More
The day started off at the Museum Batavialand where introductions were made and a number of informative presentations shown. These included an update of ICOMIA’s activities, the Propelling Our Future campaign, an overview of strategic maritime fuels (SMF) and other decarbonisation solutions as well as the continued development of a Global Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) project.
There was also a summary of the various methods to reduce evaporative fuel emissions in the US which could potentially be included in the RCD to allow for a harmonised approach and reduce both diurnal emissions and permeation through fuel tanks and hoses.
Craft Inspection
After lunch, the Boating Technology Day group visited some very interesting craft which included:
- Saffier 33 Life daysailer with a Yanmar electric sail-drive – https://saffieryachts.com/models/saffier-se-33-life/
- Linssen motorboat with 80HP diesel engine running on HVO fuel – https://www.linssenyachts.com/en/new-yachts/linssen-sl-series/40-sl-sedan.html
- Lekker 45 with 2 x Volvo Penta D6-480 sterndrive propulsion units powered by SMF – https://lekkerboats.com/lekker-45/
- Fully electric HARMO powered canal boat by Yamaha – https://www.yamaha-motor.eu/gb/en/marine-engines/harmo-2
- Suzuki outboard powered aluminium craft using SMF https://www.globalsuzuki.com/marine/
- Fliteboard e-foiling boards – https://eu.fliteboard.com/en-me

On Water Experiences
Towards the end of the day, some members of the group braved the windy (and at times wet!) conditions and ventured out for an on-the-water experience with Brunswick in a craft powered by 2 x 250 HP V8 Mercury outboards.
A special thanks to HISWA Recron for enabling IMEC to showcase the recreational marine industry involving various stakeholders and the new technologies being adopted to secure a sustainable future.
