SECAPLAS was formed in 1978 in response to the rapid development of the GRP boat business in Greece at that time. Its aim was the promotion of the common professional interests of its members, as well as of the Greek boating business in general. In 1993 membership of the association was extended so as to accept importers, merchants and those offering services within the Greek boating industry. Today SECAPLAS has more than 150 active members throughout Greece, employing more than 20,000 people. The output of its members varies from small marine fittings to megayachts, and its distributors and retailers import and handle every type of marine equipment, accessories and boats from all over the world. The turnover of the membership accounts for more than 90% of the domestic market. The Greek boating industry – thanks to steady improvements in product design and quality – now enjoys significant exports to the other EU countries, as well as to the rest of the world. To assist members with their efforts, the association organises participation in major boating shows. SECAPLAS is now a full member of IFBSO and organises the main Athens Boat Show in November annually, as well as other local boat shows in different areas of Greece. The Athens Boat Show is held in the 20,000m2 "Peace and Friendship" stadium in Piraeus. Apart from the boat shows, SECAPLAS works to solve the difficulties facing Greek boating in general so as to improve the market on behalf of its members. SECAPLAS also collaborates closely with all state authorities such as the Greek Ministry of Navigation, the National Tourist Organisation, the Hellenic Register of Shipping and homologation authorities. The association also organises technical and business seminars for the boat industry with the support of EU and local authorities.
