Description

Significant economic benefits are available to both developing and developed nations through recreational marina/resort tourism. These benefits can be greatly enhanced through functional, cost-effective and environmentally compatible recreational marina and waterfront design. The paper examines the economic benefits of such development and how such recreational marina/resorts can encourage tourism and access, as well as the challenges involved in creating a Master Plan which incorporates a wide range of services, amenities and slip layouts, while maintaining environmental compatibility. A review is provided of the attributes that a recreational marina needs, such as: being equipped to handle both the water and land-based traveler; serving as both a `Port of Call` and a base for further land and nautical exploration; and providing upland amenities for those interested in `the waterfront` but who have no intention of actually boating. The development of such a facility is reviewed in depth, with particular emphasis on the fact that the in water marine aspects of the project be wholly integrated with the design of the overall plan.
