The project`s main objective is to establish a telematics application with multimedia capacity aimed at being of service in the field of sports and tourist boats. There is at present a set of needs which the MEDPORTS project seeks to cover in the Mediterranean countries of the EU. It is thought to meet these needs by: – offering navigators an electronic marinas guide that facilitates the task of locating these ports, informs about their tourist area, all services available in each port, availability of moorings and their location in the port, allows bookings to be made… – making it possible for the skipper of the boat to complete entry and departure forms himself by using smart cards. This would facilitate the task of registering arrivals in the marinas both the skipper and the port authority. – having a database that contains all port traffic (entries and departures) of boats sailing in the Mediterranean. This database would serve all port and shipping authorities in the Mediterranean countries of the EU and it could therefore become an instrument of co-operation between all of them. – offering complete weather reports – Meteosat photos included – which could, for example, be consulted from the actual boats. -facilitating the location of boats in difficulties or in emergency situation. -facilitating the task of searching for stolen boats. – making other complementary services possible, such as establishing a boats and products purchase/sale register with European coverage. – and, lastly, establishing a modular base platform to witch services can be added to meet new needs as and when they occur in the future, By storing information addressed towards meeting the aforementioned tasks, the aim is to establish a set of multimedia databases which can be consulted trough a set of friendly user interfaces with multimedia capacity. The aim is to develop user interfaces for access through Internet. (World-Wide-Web), ISDN and GSM. It is also intended to study the possibilities of using a global satellite system for mobile communications.
