Marina Fire Emergency Response Contingency Planning According to a recent survey we conducted, 72 out of 75 randomly selected marinas and full-service boatyards have experienced a fire in the last five years, and many of those have suffered more than one. If you`ve been in this business for five years, statistics would suggest that you have already had at least one fire. Your fire, like most, probably went unreported because your employees-or your customers-extinguished it at the incipient stage. Then everyone just said, Wow, we were lucky, and continued with the business of the day. For a while, the fire was the hot topic of conversation during coffee breaks or in the lunchroom, but soon the daily routine took over again. You needed to get the powerboat Puffin into the paint shop and the engine going in Nor`Easter, and you tell yourself, I just don`t have the time right now for fire training. But, this fall-yeah-that will be a good time to set something up. Why wait? Of the list of possible emergencies that you face every day, fire is the one that will most challenge your ability to. react in an organized and planned manner. Statistically, people apparently always respond better to medical and police emergencies than to those caused by fire. However, you can work with your employees to be ready when that inevitable fire occurs in your marina.
