Description

Marina Design & Development with an Environmental Conscience Marina development that occurred over the past five decades was generally guided by either a desire of the marina developer to mess around on the waterfront or to reap substantial monetary reward. Both perspectives looked mainly at creating a facility to maximise the use of available land, at the least cost, while providing minimal or slightly better services for the recreational boating clients. Times have changed! Today, any development, and especially waterfront development, must be considerate of the total development picture, including; impacts to the socioeconomic fabric of the community, market desires, rate-of-return on investment and environmental impacts. These issues are broad-based and far ranging, and often have site-specific ramifications. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the nature of change in marina design and development as a result of an awakening of environmental concern. The merits of environmental protection are laudable, and in concept, supported by both developers and waterway users, but what are the technical ramifications and is implementation possible? Those are the questions addressed in this paper.
