Description

Boating Industry International`s 1999 Marina Survey Results The 1999 Boating Industry International Marina Survey was the first survey of marinas worldwide conducted by the magazine. More than 500 responses were received from 19 countries. Some of the highlights from the data are described below. The recreational marine industry is facing several serious issues that may impact the future of the industry. One major issue is consumer participation in marine-related sports and activities. Statistics indicate a bulk of the boating market is concentrated among adults 45 to 65 years old. One concern in the industry is how to get younger boaters interested in marine sports so that as current boaters discontinue their boating activities, a new group of consumers will replace them. Some figures found in this survey indicate that although interest in industry activities remains high, only a minority of participants are people new to the marine industry. The environment is another concern before the marine industry. Opponents of developing the marine industry point to environmental factors to indicate reasons why industry growth should not be encouraged. Our survey highlights the steps individual marinas as well as governments are taking in order to make recreational marine activities environmentally-friendly. As demographic and economic factors around the world change, so will the marine industry. The 1999 Boating Industry International Marina Survey provides a snapshot of the industry`s current status as well as some indication of where it may be going.
